    Bro whut- "skimping out" and fkn around w/ all kinds of over-simplified, janky backgrounds behind really nice foregrounds has been a core comics tradition since the invention of comics. People would even photocopy photographs and take that posterized b/w and slap the background in there, so many ways that works great and I thought your basic janky background looked DOPE!! I can't stand detail in backgrounds, abstract atmospheric perspective is cooler to me, check out Samurai Jack as the ultimate example of just using basic cut-outs & texture for backgrounds, looks amazing. Cheers :)

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD 5 месяцев назад

      Yo! Yeah, there are times and places for simple backgrounds, and making shorthand backgrounds. BUT I think the point I'm trying (and perhaps failing) to make is that backgrounds and their detail change the way a reader interacts with a panel. More detail=slower reading. So, you can DEFINITELY control your reader's reading speed by having more or less detail, but if you're going to have a high detail background, really go for it! :)

    Hi Scott, I use CSP mostly but it doesn't use CMYK. do you color exclusively in photoshop? Do you have to select CMYK in Photoshop? When I color in CSP I screen print CMYK colors and try to match it when I'm painting in CSP. ... appreciate your work!

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD 5 месяцев назад

      Hey Stu! Thanks so much for the kind words! I mostly color in PS these days, but sometimes I get lazy and color sketches and things in CSP, especially if I'm just working on my iPad. In PS, though, I still work in RGB to get the full gamut of colors for web, BUT I'll often use Control (or Command on Mac) + Y to swap to the CMYK Preview mode to see what might change. A lot of digital printers can do more colors than just CMYK, so you could get a wider range, but I'll often let InDesign do that conversion for me when I'm making the PDF for the printers, so long as I've made it look good in the CMYK Preview mode. Hope that helps! :)

I find this good if I want the exact same curve in several places on my drawing. I can draw the curve then move the ruler someplace else and draw the same curve there.

    None of my editors want me to letter in Photoshop anymore. It's all about Illustrator. Though lately, I've been seeing people teaching how to letter in InDesign. You can resize the balloon, and the letters will automatically adjust inside it, instead of doing them separately. That seems like the next step.

    • @ScottD
      @ScottD 10 месяцев назад

      Oh yeah, Photoshop is not the "best" way to do it, by far. But if someone can only afford one Adobe product, I'd say this is still it. Illustrator is definitely the preferred way, and InDesign seems like a good solution, too, so long as your computer can run the High Graphics mode. Making masks, etc, are the reason I like Photoshop, personally, since I like to have the balloons and text interact with the art, and it's just easier for me to do in PS. Definitely can be done in the others, too, though!

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 10 месяцев назад

      @@ScottD I see what you mean. Masking is really important. being able to put balloons behind figures is one of those little touches that really makes comics sing. It's been really annoying to learn Illustrator. Despite the fact it's the same company, it seems like neither program has any idea how the other works, or expects anyone to learn both, so half the tools work in completely different ways. But these days, it seems like no one wants to deal with Photoshop lettering anymore. Out of curiosity, who publishes your work?
